SUMMARY:Seal Beach PD Sergeant Brian Gray speaks on City's Hazard Mitigation Plan
DESCRIPTION:Seal Beach Police Emergency Services Coordinator Sergeant Brian Gray will speak at the Emergency Information Council’s speaker series about the City’s Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) on Monday\, May 13\, in Clubhouse 4\, at 1pm. \nRegardless of the cause of a disaster\, emergency management is needed to prepare for\, mitigate\, respond to\, and recover from it. The LHMP allows public safety officials and city staff\, elected officials\, and members of the public to understand the threats from natural and human-caused hazards in our community and recommends specific actions to proactively decrease these threats before disasters occur. An LHMP is a way for the City to become more prepared in advance of these disasters\, so when they do occur\, less damage occurs and recovery is easier. Our community can use LHMP strategies to reduce instances of property damage\, injury\, and loss of life from disasters. \nAn LHMP includes an assessment of the threat to Seal Beach\, which will describe how our community and its members\, particularly disabled persons are vulnerable to future disasters. For Seal Beach those hazards include earthquakes and liquefaction\, tsunamis\, wildfires\, tornadoes\, waterspouts and wind events. \nSergeant Gray will discuss the LHMP hazard mitigation strategy\, which lays out specific policy recommendations for Seal Beach to carry out going forward. More about the plan can be found at the City’s website: https://www.sealbeachca.gov/Departments/Police/Public-Safety/Local-Hazard-Mitigation-Plan. \nSergeant Gray has served the SBPD for a decade. His role as the emergency manager for the past 2 years showcases his commitment to preparedness and effective crisis response. Brian’s academic achievements include earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UC Irvine\, reflecting his dedication to continuous learning and professional development. Residing in College Park West\, Brian is not just a public servant but also a valued member of the Seal Beach community he serves. In 2018\, Sergeant Brian Gray was listed in the Top 100 Influential People in Orange County by the OC Register for his work with the homeless community.

SUMMARY:Roxann Crawford FEMA Disability Integration Specialist to Speak Clubhouse 3 Room 2 at 1PM
DESCRIPTION:According to the latest US Census about 40% of the Leisure World Community have one or more disability. People with disabilities are two to four times more likely to be injured or killed in a natural disaster. The keys to effective disaster preparedness—be informed\, make a plan and take action—apply to all of us\, but people with access and functional needs or disabilities\, should approach preparedness planning with additional considerations. \nRoxann Crawford was the featured speaker at the next Leisure World Emergency Information Council (EIC) speaker’s event to be held March 18 in clubhouse 3 Room 2 at 1:30pm. \nRoxann serves as the Disability Integration Specialist for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)\, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region 9. She has been in the role since 2016. Before working in the region\, Roxann was the Disability Integration Advisor on the National Incident Management Assistance Team – West\, one of three elite national first response teams. As the regional subject matter expert\, Roxann works with internal federal partners and external partners to bolster equality in disaster preparedness\, response and recovery. \nRoxann partners with all federal program areas to educate and foster a whole community response that is fully inclusive of the needs of people with disabilities and provides direct programmatic and process review to create more inclusive and fully accessible options during disaster response and recovery\, identifying barriers\, and finding solutions. In her talk she often uses stories to help us understand the challenges faced by those with disabilities that might not be apparent. \nRoxann joined FEMA 20 years ago when she volunteered to leave her job as a Chicago Firefighter & EMT to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Over that time her own family experience with persons with disability challenges brought her to FEMA’s Office of Disability Integration and her post in Sacramento. \nRoxanne’s presentation is provided here: \nSeal Beach Presentation

SUMMARY:Vital Document Scanning Event - Feb 22\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe Emergency Information Council will hold its first free Vital Document Scanning event on Feb. 22nd from 1 to 3pm in Clubhouse 3\, room 3. \nAn emergency or disaster can erase the vital documents and records of our lives instantly if we haven’t prepared in advance. Planning ahead means saving the basic information needed to endure a crisis and get lives back on track afterwards. One way to do that is to have our vital documents and information scanned onto a memory stick\, sometimes called a thumb drive\, and keeping that drive with your emergency Go Bag in case you have to evacuate in a hurry. \nThe Emergency Information Council’s first scanning event will scan documents for the first 60 residents on to a thumb drive. For this first event your documents should not exceed 20 pages. More documents can be added to your drive at future events if needed. \nDocuments and information we might need to quickly rebuild our life might include those verifying our personal identification\, wills\, Leisure World Stock and Member Certificates. Medical\, financial\, and insurance identifying and contact information are other possibilities along with an inventory of our valuables and home contents. \nEIC President Jackie Dunagan is shown here getting the scanner ready to copy vital documents onto a colorful thumb drive for safe keeping. The copier shown here can be used to transfer odd sized materials into the proper size for scanning. The scanning and thumb drive are free. Also available will be the optional waterproof container for the thumb drive and the fireproof document holder shown in the photo.
